Obama made the announcement to end American 'occupation' (7 years March 2003 under then-President George W. Bush) saying it is time to move forward now that the Iraqi people have the lead responsibility for their security.
However, the transitional force will remain in Iraq to advise and assist Iraq’s security forces.
In an address form his office, the president paid tribute to about 50,000 American troops remain in Iraq; the men and women in the armed forces.
Mr. Obama's motivation comes from the “most urgent task” to restore the U.S. economy and put the millions who have lost their jobs back to work.
He hopes to transfer resources from Iraq to Afghanistan against al-Qaida and its terror allies.
